"COMMIT and TRUST"
Select your precise target and the appropriate club/swing. If you have doubts, change your plan and fully commit to it.
Each time you stand over me and prepare to swing I look in your eyes and know just what you’re thinking…annoyance or embarrassment over your last chunk shot, fear that your last good shot was a fluke, obsessing about the “perfect” swing mechanics needed to propel me off the tee, into the air, and away from trouble.
Whenever you over-think your mechanics and dwell on the outcome of your shot, you disconnect from your best possible result and trigger your fight-or flight-response, which creates indecision, tension and insecurity. You’re a mental mess.
It’s not enough to simply think “I gotta hit the fairway” or “put it in the hole”; you need to s-l-o-w—d-o-w-n and execute your very specific plan based on a solid pre-shot routine. Learning to TRUST your swing and COMMIT to your shot are two more of those high-performance fundamentals this game demands.
Start with the courage to suspend judgment about your performance or your swing. Keep your confidence high and don't “quit” on your shot. Do exactly what you intend.
Focus on a very specific target. Create a specific goal for each shot—for this, your next shot. Trusting your swing is something you can, and must work on and practice, just as you work on and practice the swing itself.
Stay patient. Stay focused.
Create a methodical pre-shot routine that’s based on learned behavior, and engrain it in your game. Understand that playing your best golf isn’t about holding on to one overarching goal, it’s about selecting a specific target, determining the distance, trajectory and how I, the ball, will react once I’m back on the ground.
That’s how you stay in the moment—by focusing on the positive outcome your next, great shot will produce. Clear your mind by taking a practice swing or two and when it’s time to pull the trigger, believe in your strategy. Stay committed to the shot you’ve planned and see it in your mind’s eye. Like the pros, play with a high level of intention.
Commit to the specifics of each and every shot and trust your swing! Have courage! And remember what golfing legend, Ben Hogan said, “The most important shot in golf is the next one.”
